Hear about this year's Annual Appeal from the leader of The Salvation Army in the UK and Ireland, Commissioner John Matear
|
For so many people, last year was one of the hardest ever. There are those who have lost their jobs and homes and ended up on the street, those who are older and desperately lonely, and those fragile families who are struggling to get by in real poverty.
 |
Frank ended up on the streets after losing his job. He was cold, frightened, with no family nearby and seriously ill with a heart condition.
With no money for medication he felt more and more ill every day, and was terrified he would die on the street.
We gave him a safe bed to sleep and the support he needed to get back on his feet.

Beryl found herself desperately lonely, in poor health and with little money after her beloved husband died.
Unable to get out and about, Beryl became increasingly isolated and lonely. The last straw was when her heating broke.
We gave her help at home and invited her to one of our day centres where she has made new friends and discovered a new lease of life.

Jenny, a vulnerable young mum, lived in fear that her baby would be taken away.
She'd suffered years of domestic abuse but when her partner went to jail she didn't know how she'd pay the rent.
We offered Jenny a flat in one of our family centres, where she learnt practical skills so that she could build a brighter future for her little girl.
